The amount of air in your sand-picture determines how fast or slow the sand escapes through the air barrier. The more air — the bigger the barrier. This will result in a slower release of the sand. The less air — the smaller the barrier. This will allow the sand to escape more quickly.

Water naturally evaporates, and with continued air removal from your sand art, it will eventually show signs of being thirsty and needing a refill. To keep your sand art vibrant, it's recommended to refill it about once a year.
