The air inside your sandpicture plays an important role in regulating the sand's fall.
The amount of air in your sand-picture determines how fast or slow the sand escapes through the air barrier. The more air — the bigger the barrier. This will result in a slower release of the sand. The less air — the smaller the barrier. This will allow the sand to escape more quickly.
